[12:00] Owakudani
Owakudani – Experience the Volcanic Atmosphere that Nurtures Hakone's Beauty
(Approx. 50 minutes, free time for exploration)
Located in Hakone, at the southeastern foot of Mount Fuji, Owakudani is one of Hakone's most famous sightseeing spots. This scenic area is a volcanic crater remnant formed by a massive eruption on the northern flank of Kamiyama (the main peak) during the final stages of Hakone's volcanic activity, about 4,000 years ago.
Most of the hot spring water here is toxic, which is why it was originally known as "Jigokudani" (Hell Valley). It wasn't until Emperor Meiji visited in 1876 that the name was changed to the more auspicious "Owakudani" (Great Boiling Valley).
Must-Try Local Delicacy: Black Eggs (Kuro-tamago)
You can optionally purchase and taste Owakudani's famous black eggs! About a 15-minute walk from the entrance of the Nature Study Trail, you'll find the "Tamago-chaya" (Egg Tea House) amidst the rising steam. Their signature black eggs, boiled fresh on-site, come with a legendary saying: "Eat one, and your life will be extended by 7 years."
The eggs turn jet black through a unique natural process: they are boiled for an hour in a hot spring pool at around 80C, then steamed for another 15 minutes at 100C. The black color is caused by a chemical reaction between the iron and hydrogen sulfide in the hot spring water, which forms black iron oxide on the countless pores of the eggshells.

It was great!
What a day! We were lucky to see Mount Fuji clearly. The Hakone area was so beautiful and peaceful, I wish we could stay longer.
Excellent one-day escape from Tokyo. You get mountains, hot springs atmosphere, and a bit of history all together.
Smooth transportation, great photo spots, and delicious local snacks. Definitely worth it.
If you want a stress-free way to see Fuji and Hakone in one day, this is the tour to book.
The highlight for me was Owakudani. Such a unique landscape, unlike anywhere else I’ve seen.
The itinerary is just right—not rushed, not too slow. Great for families.
Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, always making sure everyone was comfortable. Highly recommend for first-time visitors to Japan!
A perfect balance of sightseeing and relaxation. I loved the boat ride and the cable car views.
Seeing Mount Fuji up close and then visiting Hakone felt like two trips in one. The Owakudani valley was unforgettable with the volcanic steam and black eggs.
